- 日本語: 時間の、時間的な/一時的な、現世の
- 定義: 時間に関わること。空間を指す spatial と対になる。
- 共起: temporal locality(時間的局所性)、temporal data(時系列データ)、temporal logic(時相論理)
- 用例: The cache exploits temporal locality: data accessed once is likely to be accessed again soon.

abrupt
- IPA: /əˈbrʌpt/ · uh-BRUPT(強勢は第2音節)
- 日本語: ① 突然の、唐突な ② (態度が)ぶっきらぼうな、そっけない

- 派生: substantially(大幅に)
- 用例: We made substantial progress this sprint — about 70% of the backlog is done.
substantial と substantive
日本語ではどちらも「実質的」と訳しがちだが、焦点が違う。量か中身かで切り分ける。
| substantial | substantive | |
|---|---|---|
| 焦点 | 量・規模(how much) | 中身・本質(whether it matters) |
| 日本語 | 相当な、かなりの | 本質的な、中身のある |
| 語調 | 日常〜フォーマル全般 | フォーマル寄り(法律・議論・レビュー) |
| 例 | a substantial amount | a substantive discussion |
差がはっきり出るのは変更を指すとき。substantial changes は変更量が多いことで、整形だけでもありうる。substantive changes は中身が変わることで、条件を一つ反転させるだけでもよい。巨大だが表面的な diff は substantial but not substantive、小さいが本質的な diff は substantive but not substantial。
語について語る語
prefix / suffix / postfix
- prefix /ˈpriː.fɪks/ · PREE-fiks — 接頭辞。語の先頭に付く要素(un-, re-, pre-, sub-)。CS では文字列の先頭部分、また動詞で「
m_を付ける」の意。 - suffix /ˈsʌf.ɪks/ · SUF-iks — 接尾辞。語の末尾に付く要素(-ly, -ful, -ing, -ness)。語源は suf-(= 同化した sub-「下・後」)+ fix(固定する)。
- postfix /ˈpoʊst.fɪks/ · POHST-fiks — 後置。日常語ではなく CS・数学の用語。後置演算子(
i++)や後置記法を指す。 - 上位語: prefix・suffix はいずれも affix(接辞)→ morpheme(形態素)。
使い分け: 語や文法の話なら常に suffix。記法や演算子の位置なら postfix。言語学の組は prefix / suffix / infix、記法の組は prefix / infix / postfix。
textprefix + 3 4 infix 3 + 4 postfix 3 4 +
後置記法では (3 + 4) × 2 が 3 4 + 2 × になり、括弧が要らない。
lexical
- IPA: /ˈlɛk.sɪ.kəl/ · LEK-si-kul
- 日本語: 語彙の、語彙的な/(CS)字句の
- 定義: 文法に対して語彙に関わること。CS ではソースコードのトークンや字面に関わること。
- 語感: grammatical / syntactic(文法的・統語的)と対になる専門語。日常的な言い換えはない。
- 共起: lexical analysis(字句解析)、lexical scope(字面上の=静的スコープ)、lexical meaning ⇔ grammatical meaning
- 関連形: lexicon(語彙)、lexeme(語彙素)、lexer(字句解析器)
- 用例: The dialects differ mainly at the lexical level.
prosody
Her grammar is perfect, but her prosody still follows Japanese mora-timing.
mnemonic
- IPA: /nɪˈmɒn.ɪk/ · nih-MON-ik
- 日本語: 記憶術、覚え方(「語呂合わせ」に相当)
- 発音注意: 語頭の m は黙字。knee と同じ出だしになる。
- 語源: ギリシャ語の記憶の女神 Mnemosyne。同じ mnē- が amnesia(a-「無」+ 記憶)にも隠れている。
- 用例: "Super = above, sub = below" is a handy mnemonic for superclass vs subclass.
portmanteau
- IPA: /pɔːtˈmæn.təʊ/ · port-MAN-toh
- 日本語: かばん語、混成語
- 定義: 二語を切って繋いだ語。brunch = breakfast + lunch、smog = smoke + fog、fintech = financial + technology。
- 語源: 元は「二つに開く旅行鞄」。Lewis Carroll が『鏡の国のアリス』でこの意味に転用したのが定着した。鞄に二つの意味を詰める、という比喩。
- ⚠️ 混同注意: portmanteau は語を切って繋ぐもの。切らずに並べた laptop のような語は compound(複合語)で、別の現象。
- 用例: "Podcast" is a portmanteau of "iPod" and "broadcast."
概念と関係
axiom
- IPA: /ˈæk.si.əm/ · AK-see-uhm
- 日本語: 公理、自明の前提
- 定義: 証明せずに真として受け入れ、そこから他を導く出発点の命題。
- 語感: 「議論の余地なく正しい」ではなく「この議論ではこれを前提に置く」という宣言。だから公理が違えば結論も正当に違う。
- 形容詞: axiomatic /ˌæk.si.əˈmæt.ɪk/(自明の)
- 用例: It's a core axiom of zero-trust design that the network is already hostile.
symbiotic
- IPA: /ˌsɪm.baɪˈɒt.ɪk/ · sim-by-OT-ik
- 日本語: 共生的な、相互に有益な
- 定義: 生物学の共生から。双方が相手の存在によって利益を得る関係。
- ⚠️ 厳密には: 生物学の symbiosis は片方だけが得をする場合も含むが、日常英語ではほぼ「双方に利益がある」の意味でしか使わない。相互利益を強調したいなら mutually beneficial が曖昧さゼロ。
- 名詞: symbiosis /ˌsɪm.baɪˈəʊ.sɪs/
- 用例: The relationship between the platform and its plugin authors is symbiotic.
payoff
- IPA: /ˈpeɪ.ɒf/(米 /ˈpeɪ.ɑːf/)
- 日本語: 見返り、成果/(ゲーム理論)利得
- 語感: 単なる結果ではなく「投じたものに対する見返り」。投資・労力とセットで語られる。
- ⚠️ 綴り: 名詞は一語 payoff、動詞句は二語 pay off(The investment paid off.)。
- 用例: The payoff for investing in automated tests showed up the first time we refactored.
interstitial
- IPA: /ˌɪn.təˈstɪʃ.əl/ · in-tuh-STISH-uhl
- 日本語: 隙間の、介在する
- 語源: ラテン語 interstitium(間に立つもの)。
- 分野で顔が変わる語: 医学では interstitial fluid(間質液)、広告では interstitial ad(ページ遷移の合間に挟まる全面広告)、UI では画面遷移の中間状態。共通するのは「本体と本体のあいだ」。
- 用例: The interstitial loading state should never last long enough to be readable.
informatics
- IPA: /ˌɪn.fəˈmæt.ɪks/ · in-fuh-MAT-iks
- 日本語: 情報学
- 語感: computer science が計算そのものを扱うのに対し、informatics は「ある領域の情報をどう扱うか」に寄る。ほぼ常に領域名とセットで現れる: health informatics, bioinformatics, legal informatics。
- ⚠️ 単複: -ics の学問名なので単数扱い(Informatics is …)。
- 用例: She moved from clinical practice into health informatics.
fiercely / administrative roster
- fiercely /ˈfɪəs.li/ — 激しく、猛烈に。fierce(獰猛な)の副詞。程度の強調としては攻撃性の含みが残るので、fiercely competitive(競争が熾烈)、fiercely loyal(激烈に忠実)のように、強い感情や競争と結びつく語に付く。fiercely convenient のような穏やかな語には付かない。
- administrative roster /ədˈmɪn.ɪ.strə.tɪv ˈrɒs.tə/ — 勤務者名簿、当番表。roster は単なる list ではなく、役割や当番の割り当てを含む動的な名簿。the on-call roster(オンコール当番表)が技術文脈での定番。動詞 roster もある(英)。
続きを表す語の使い分け
「次に続く」を訳し分けずに済ませると精度が落ちる5語。隙間を許すかで切ると整理できる。
| 語 | IPA | ニュアンス | 時間的な隙間 | 用例 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| subsequent | /ˈsʌb.sɪ.kwənt/ | その後の(フォーマル) | 許す | The first run passed, but subsequent runs failed. |
| following | /ˈfɒl.əʊ.ɪŋ/ | 次の(中立・標準) | 次の順番 | We'll fix it in the following sprint. |
| consecutive | /kənˈsek.jə.tɪv/ | 連続した・立て続けの | ゼロ | Three consecutive failed login attempts. |
| sequential | /sɪˈkwen.ʃəl/ | 順次的な(1→2→3の順序) | 順序が保たれれば可 | Run the migrations in sequential order. |
| continuous | /kənˈtɪn.ju.əs/ | 切れ目のない | 完全になし | Continuous integration. |
要点: consecutive は「間に他のものが挟まらない」、sequential は「順序が正しい」、continuous は「そもそも途切れない」。3回連続の失敗は consecutive(間に成功が挟まっていない)であって、continuous ではない。
依頼と時間の言い方
quick と quickly、そして real quick
- quickly — 標準の副詞。純粋に動作の速度が速いこと。
- quick(フラット副詞)— 形容詞と同形のまま副詞に使う口語形。速度そのものより「手間も時間も取らせない」という軽さを伝える。
- real quick — 米口語の定型。really ではなく real を使うのがこの形の特徴で、崩れた響きが「気軽さ」を演出する。Let me check this real quick.
- ⚠️ 使いどころ: どちらも社内チャット向け。社外メールや文書では quickly を選ぶ。
「時間のあるときに」のバリエーション
| フレーズ | レジスター | ニュアンス |
|---|---|---|
| no rush on this | 最もくだけた | 「全然急ぎません」 |
| if you get a chance | カジュアル | 「もし手が空いたらでいいので」 |
| when you have time | 標準・中立 | 「お時間のあるときに」 |
| at your convenience | フォーマル | 「ご都合のよいときに」(社外向け) |
| if you're available | 予定調整 | 「お時間空いていますか」(枠の確認) |
⚠️ 注意: at your earliest convenience は形が丁寧なだけで、意味は「できるだけ早く」。柔らかい依頼のつもりで使うと催促になる。
over the course of ~
- IPA: /ˌəʊ.və ðə ˈkɔːs əv/
- 日本語: 〜の過程で、〜にかけて
- 語感: during が単に「その期間内に」と言うだけなのに対し、over the course of は「時間の流れの中で徐々に進む」変化を含意する。一点の出来事には使わない(✗ over the course of the meeting, he arrived)。
- 用例: Over the course of the next two sprints, we'll migrate the legacy endpoints.
句動詞と会話の定型
touch base と touch upon
似て見えるが由来も意味も別で、入れ替えられない。
- touch base (with 人 / on 話題) — 連絡を取る、状況をすり合わせる。野球で塁に触れる動作から。短く同期を取るニュアンスで、内容の深さは問わない。
- Let's touch base on the rollout tomorrow. / I wanted to touch base with you before the review.
- touch upon / touch on (話題) — 軽く言及する、さらっと触れる。深入りしないことが含意の中心。
- We'll touch upon the security model on slide 8, but the details are in the appendix.
pull out と play out
- pull out /pʊl ˈaʊt/ — ①(車が)発進する、本線に出る Be careful when you pull out of the driveway. ②撤退する、手を引く The firm pulled out of the joint venture.
- play out /pleɪ ˈaʊt/ — ①展開する、推移する(結果がまだ見えていないことを含意)Let's see how it plays out. ②受動で played out = 使い古された、飽きられた。
"How are you doing?" への返し
健康状態の報告ではなく挨拶なので、内容よりテンポが大事。返して打ち返すのが型。
- 標準: "Good, thanks. How about you?" / "Pretty good." / "Not bad."
- やや丁寧: "I'm doing well, thank you."
- 親しい相手に実情を: "Busy!" / "Tired, but hanging in there."
- ⚠️ 注意: 質問した側も答えを待たずに次へ進むことが多い。長く答える必要はないが、聞き返さないと素っ気なく響く。
言い換えメモ
2026-07-15 —「PR をサクッと見てほしい」
- 元: "can someone take a look at my PR and approve it real quick?"
- 自然:
- "Can someone take a quick look at my PR and approve it?" — Slack の標準形
- "Could someone review my PR when you get a chance?" — 丁寧
- "Small PR ready for review — could someone approve real quick if it looks good?" — 軽微な変更向け
- なぜ: approve it real quick は quick が approve に掛かるため、「よく見ずに承認して」と読めてしまう。同じ quick を look に掛け替えると「目を通すのは短くて済みます」となり、レビューの手間を軽く見ていない姿勢が出る。③のように PR が小さいと先に伝えて おけば、real quick を残しても角が立たない。
